The Worst Music Product Parents Buy For Piano Students

Have you ever heard the saying, "There are no shortcuts"?

Consider this: buying certain music products can actually set your child back in their music learning by 1-2 years. In contrast, our Muso Flash Cards (and Muso Method Active Learning Concepts), can help propel your child's sight reading skills from 12 weeks to 6 months.

The product that everyone is buying, unaware of its negative impact on their children's music learning journey:

When you buy the wrong product, you risk diminishing your child's confidence and resilience towards classical music. You might even notice an increase in their stress or dislike for classical piano by the time they reach Grade 1.

Shortcuts may seem appealing, but they can quickly become major bottlenecks in your child's musical journey. The ill-conceived products I see on social media, Amazon, or any marketplace are often the worst choices for piano students aspiring to learn classical music. If you're a pop, jazz musician, or hobbyist, this blog may not resonate with you.

In classical music, the ability to sight-read notes is crucial. Speak to any musician in a chamber orchestra, and they'll tell you that professionals sight-read their music during the first rehearsal! No amount of prodigious perfect pitch can substitute for that skill.

You might think, "But I’m not a professional; I’m just a serious classical music student." That’s valid, but what if you one day fall in love with classical music and decide to pursue it as a career? The purpose of studying seriously at a young age is to foster a love for music—one that could eventually become a career option.

Many parents have spent substantial amounts on their child's piano studies, only to find that their children can no longer touch the piano. This is especially true for many students in Asia, particularly in Hong Kong, who struggle to read music. Are you ready to become a parent who spends a fortune on classical music tuition only for your child to learn nothing and develop a dislike for it?

If they do end up hating it, at least let them be able to read notes! (Of course, we’d prefer they don’t hate it.)

It’s like investing heavily in your child’s secondary language studies—be it French, Chinese, Japanese, or German. They might ace their final exams, but if their learning is based solely on memorization, the only way they’ll speak French in France is by copying your sentences. That’s not learning; that’s copying!

So, I ask you: do you want your child to learn an instrument and play it independently, or do you want to create a copycat? If it’s the former, do NOT buy that hazardous product! Spread the word—this is a big SOS!
